Just how widespread is sex trafficking in America? Why is it so incredibly difficult for the victims to ever truly recover and have healthy relationships? How are sex trafficking and pornography connected? And, what can we do to protect our children from sex trafficking? This is American Thought Leaders 🇺🇸, and I’m Jan Jekielek. In this episode, we’ll sit down with Jaco Booyens. The brother of a sex trafficking survivor, Booyens is the founder of SHAREtogether, which combats child sex trafficking. He is also the producer and director of the feature film on the subject, 8 DAYS.
Child sex trafficking is a form of modern day slavery, and according the Department of Justice, human trafficking is one of the fastest growing criminal enterprise. Nacole, a mother of four, shares her story about her family’s painful experience with this issue, the professional help they found and the steps we can take to ensure that this does not continue. Nacole lives in the southwest with her husband of 20 years and they have 4 children and 3 grandchildren. Nacole works as the Director of a local Preschool. She became an influential advocate fighting to prevent child exploitation in 2010 when her youngest daughter became a victim to this horrible crime. She has helped to get several bills passed in the state of Washington that deal with this crime and worked with Seattle’s Mayor to try to prevent the use of online sites to sell children as ‘escorts.’ This talk was given November 9, 2013 in Seattle at TEDxRainier, a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
Since 1999, Dr. Transchel has been researching modern day human trafficking around the world. Her findings, after interviews with dozens of victims, will surprise and shock even those who consider themselves well-informed. Besides for working as a professor of History at CSU Chico, Dr. Transchel provides trainings for various branches of the military as well as the state department, on domestic and international human trafficking and she also serves as an expert witness on human trafficking from Moldova in Federal Asylum hearings.
Sex Trafficking of underage girls is happening right in our own backyards, small towns and big cities across America. These kids are our kids, profoundly vulnerable to the lure of traffickers because of childhood abuse and trauma. Ms. Rheinschild graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She received her degree in Sociology and Spanish from University of California of Santa Barbara. Ms. Rheinschild has worked at the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office in the Victim Witness Assistance Program since 1994. She is responsible for oversight of a program that provides comprehensive services, support and advocacy to victims of violent crime and their family members. Collaborating with local, regional and state partners, she formed a Human Trafficking Victim Advocacy Program and began a multi-agency Countywide Human Trafficking Task Force in 2013 to identify and investigate human trafficking and address the complex needs of survivors. She also has oversight of the Countywide Sexual Assault Response Team, a collaborative partnership of Law Enforcement, Rape Crisis Centers and Child Welfare Services to provide medical-legal forensic exams and advocacy to survivors of sexual assault.

Payzee Mahmod was a normal teenager, idolising pop stars and pursuing her education. But her childhood was stolen from her when, at just 16 years old, her parents coerced her into marrying a much older man. Lacking the knowledge, power and language to protest the marriage, Payzee hoped another adult or professional in her life would intervene, help her and stop the marriage. Tragically the marriage went ahead and Payzee turned to self-harm and small acts of rebellion, to try and escape. But then everything changed. Her sister Banaz left her own abusive child marriage andmoved back in with their parents. In January 2006, after months of rumours and death threats, Banaz went missing. Three months later, her body was found in Birmingham – her father, her uncle and 3 other Kurdish men were tried and sentenced to life imprisonment. When Payzee turned 18, she got divorced and arranged Banaz’s funeral – all in the same month. Now she is speaking out on behalf of herself, her sister Banaz, and every child at risk of child marriage, to demand that the current law in England and Wales which shockingly allows marriage from 16 with parental consent is changed and that child marriage under the age of 18 becomes a crime. A survivor of child marriage, who lost her sister Banaz in a tragic “honour” killing, Payzee’s focus to prevent so called “honour” based abuse and child marriage could not be more personal. A Kurdish immigrant, raised in London, with a successful career in the fashion industry, she uses her voice to speak out as a survivor – not a victim – and has made it her mission to be a changemaker, helping to tackle these harmful practices. As an IKWRO ambassador and campaigner, her story and experiences have reached international audiences, including the Kurdish community. She has spoken widely on the need for changes to the laws surrounding child marriage and “honour” based abuse across radio, television and newspapers and met with government officials and the Home Office to explain first-hand why change is needed to finally make child marriage a crime.

Forced and child marriage seem like problems that don’t exist in America, but in reality marriage under the age of 18 is legal in all 50 states. After escaping her own forced marriage, activist Fraidy Reiss is working to help women and girls close the legal loopholes around these marriages for good. Fraidy Reiss is an activist who is recognized internationally as an expert on forced and child marriage in America, drawing inspiration from her own abusive forced marriage. After realizing that most women and girls trying to flee or resist arranged and forced marriages are limited by finances, religious law and social customs, she founded the organization ‘Unchained At Last’ to help women successfully start new lives. Her writing on the subject has been published in the New York Times, Washington Post and countless other publications in the US and beyond, and she has been interviewed and featured by those outlets as well as Financial Times, BBC, PBS, NPR, CBS and others. Reiss has also assisted in the creation of legislation to end and reduce child marriage which has been introduced and, in some cases, already passed in multiple US states.
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Khadija Gbla grew up in Sierra Leone. As a young girl, she was subjected to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). As a woman, she lives with the consequences of FGM everyday. She is determined that this form of abuse against young girls will end, and she wants to end it in her lifetime. Khadija Gbla was born in Sierra Leone. Her family sought refuge in Australia in 2001 after enduring a thirteen-year civil war within her homeland. Khadija strives to combine her African and Australian heritage and values in order to advocate acceptance and equality within the community. Khadija’s passion for her community and for giving young people a voice in our community continues to motivate her involvement in diverse community projects. Khadija has represented Australia in the international arena at the Harvard National Model United Nations, Commonwealth Youth Forum and Australian and Africa Dialogue.
Listed by The Guardian as one of the world’s 100 most Inspirational Women, Jasvinder Sanghera has been fighting forced marriages and honour based abuse — both in her native Britain and internationally. The charity Karma Nirvana she founded in 1993 has helped establish several refuge centres for South Asian men and women fleeing forced marriages. Her commitment stems from personal experience, after running away from home fourteen years old, faced with the prospect of a forced marriage.

Aged 17, Deeyah fled from Norway confused, lost and torn between cultures. Unlike some young Muslims she picked up a camera instead of a gun. She now uses her camera (and her superpower) to shed light on the clash of cultures between Muslim parents who prioritise honour and their children’s desire for freedom. She argues that we need to understand what is happening to fight the pull to extremism.
For centuries women have been killed in the name of honor, a custom that Khalida Brohi refers to as “ego killings,” a way of preserving mens’ egos by controlling the women around them. In her powerful talk, Brohi examines the relation of honor to tradition and religion and shares about her experience of fighting this crime by claiming honor for herself and redefining it to empower women. Brohi believes that honor, which has been misused in tribal areas of Pakistan, is actually essential to a growing and healthy society. By redefining and reclaiming honor, we can find ways to fight the crimes that use it. Brohi was the first girl in her village, located in the province of Balochistan, to go to school. She attended school in Karachi. In 2004, when Brohi was 16, a close friend became a victim of an honor killing. Her friend was killed because she wanted to marry a person she loved instead of someone her family chose. Brohi began to protest honor killings while she was in Karachi, but this only angered people and caused the tribal leaders to oppose her. She fled Karachi in 2008. Brohi recalls that in response, her father told her, “don’t cry, strategize.” Instead of openly protesting, she created the Sughar Empowerment Society, which is a non-profit organization which helps women in Pakistan learn skills related to “economic and personal growth.” Sughar means “skilled, confident woman” in Urdu.

Charisse Nixon is a development psychologist who studies at risk behavior as well as protective factors among children and adolescents. According to Nixon, we know that kids and adults are suffering. In fact, some research studies have shown that rates of depression and anxiety have actually increased over the past 50 years. According to recent research, we know that approximately 1 in 5 youth will suffer from a major depressive episode by the time they leave high school. After decades of research of those who have studied this field, one thing is very clear: meaningful connections serve as protective factors in the lives of our youth. Nixon shares her ideas on how we can help our youth build those meaningful connections. Dr. Charisse Nixon is currently a Professor of Psychology at Penn State Behrend. She trains educators throughout the United States providing a unique integration of empirical research and practical strategies to help caring adults create environments that optimize children and adolescents’ developmental outcomes. Dr. David Hendricks is motivated to help others achieve sobriety. He integrates the Buddhist philosophy of mind into his mental health practice, explaining that meditation has a profound impact on the brain, including those regions of the brain affected by childhood abuse (he notes such abuse accounts for suffering of drug addiction or mental illness in adulthood). He cites new research that shows the brain has the capacity to grow new cells, and the role of epigenetics. He says a powerfully focused mind can take conscious control of the brain’s functions to heal wounds of the past. David Hendricks is a board certified physician. In the early 1980’s, he took vows as a Buddhist practitioner, and regularly studied with a Tibetan monk and professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. In 1989 he met the Dalai Lama who made a suggestion that changed his life. He and his wife, a Buddhist scholar capable of translating Sanskrit and Tibetan, left the U.S. in 2003 for north India and The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, and translated and studied a text on Buddhist psychology. They returned to the United States in 2005, and began a treatment center for substance use disorders and other mental health issues. David is currently writing a book about a new treatment methodology incorporating what he and his wife learned in India, that promises to enhance the success of treatment for these disorders.
